Live Music Options: 4/25/11 - 5/1/11

Explosions in the Sky Play Hollywood Forever on Saturday

I caught Geronimo Getty's (Aaron Kyle from Le Switch) first show at Labrie's last Tuesday. Good stuff. More country and folk songs compared to his songs with Le Switch. I also caught Prince on Friday. The show was honestly a little disappointing. There were moments of radness, but I didn't know a lot of the songs and he only played 17 songs. Looking at the setlists for the other shows, I think it was definitely the weak link.

Monday 4/25/11
[Pick of the Night] The Head & the Heart / The Devil Whale / Kayaks @ Troubadour (Sold Out) – Seattle folk-rockers had their debut reissued by Sub Pop. Generic or quality stuff?
[Recommended] Frank Fairfield @ Redwood Bar – LA’s finest purveyor of old-timey music?
The Airborne Toxic Event / Walking Sleep @ The Satellite (Sold Out) – The first of five shows in a row.
Pop Levi / Chain Gang of 1974 @ Bardot (Free w/ RSVP) – Some decent buzz for the 80’s loving Chain Gang of 1974.

Yuck Play the Echo Wednesday and The Satellite on Thursday

I caught Casey Veggies, Dom Kennedy and Freddie Gibbs at the Echo on Tuesday. Veggies has potential but just needs to keep working. The highlight for most was when Tyler from Odd Future jumped on stage for the final song. Dom Kennedy had a few tight tracks. Gibbs was good, but a little mumblecore. I think the completely inattentive crowd was throwing him off his shit. I thought indie rock crowds were kinda lame, but Tuesday's crowd was just awful...

Live Music Options: 4/4/11 - 4/10/11

Walking Sleep Have the Residency This Month at the Satellite (and a rather serious looking band photo)

Here's my guide to free music this week for all you cheap bastards. Monday start out seeing Bronto Skylift at the Silverlake Lounge then drive over to the Satellite for The Californian and Walking Sleep. On Tuesday head over to the Echo for Freddie Gibbs. Wednesday, you might actually have to fork over $10 - $15 for a show. On Thursday go to the Echoplex for Vanaprasta, Stone Darling and Polls. On Friday night hit up the Skybar for Twin Sister (although parking will cost you at least $10). Saturday - I got nothing. On Sunday head down to USC for the KXSC Fest.
